Plant with Spent flower
My pots are always collecting a variety of weeds, and I keep after those weedy seedlings. But I had never seen a seedling like this before, so I let it grow. Soon I noticed a flower bud. It opened one morning, and I was going to take a picture of it in the afternoon, but by then the flower had closed. I thought it might open again the next morning, but it did not. So, I photographed the plant with the spent flower.

Later, when the spent flower fell, I cut it open, placed it on a piece of cardboard and photographed that. When open, the flower was a 9 cm. long white sympetalous trumpet with a purple throat. The 5 cm. long sysnsepalous calyx was loose, about ½ cm. in diameter. The five 9 cm. long filaments with basifixed anthers arose from the top of the inferior ovary.

Dissected FlowerI’m certain it’s a Datura, but as far as I know, none grows in this part of the S.F. Peninsula. I’m not certain of the species, and I have no idea of how its seed got into one of my pots.

Below I have a photo of the plant with immature fruit, and close-ups of the fruit and the spent flower.
